βGuys, tonight I watched my very first opera live β they performed Don Giovanni. It was one of the most extraordinary experiences Iβve ever had. From the very beginning, I felt goosebumps, and that feeling stayed with me throughout the entire performance. By the end, I was left speechless β and so were many others. It was so powerful that the orchestra, singers, dancers, and the conductor received a full 10-minute standing ovation, which moved the conductor to tears.β
βI went to a Bourne Swan Lake about 20 years ago. That was my first live ballet and I chose it bc a hit pop song at the time had "the" Swan Lake theme in it, and I loved the music. But when I got there, the music was canned. All I heard was a recording that was too soft, feet hitting the floor with no ensemble with the music. The dancing was impressive but the production was not moving. I left in the interval and have been to one ballet in the ensuing 20 years, and that was because a friend gave me a ticket.β
βI didnβt feel like [opera] was a space for me. [...] Thatβs changed for me since I started going to the opera, I mean, when a character feels something, those emotions come across so strongly, right? [...] I didnβt know that that was something opera could do.β
