โBeth and I did another Spartan Race in May 2017. It was a muddy course. The rope obstacle was at the end. I had trained for months. I got up about halfway, but then the mud on my shoes and on the rope was leading me to slip, and I got nervous. While I had practiced on other ropes, the Spartan rope was thinner and more slippery than my practice ropes, and I did not yet have the confidence to make it to the top. So, I gave up this time. But I knew it wasnโt over.โ
โWe were to be starting near the back which meant we got to stand with our nerves a little longer. Shuffling towards the start line felt like moving towards an abyss. Biological chemistry - anticipation, anxiousness, and endorphins all firing at once. A flavor of what it must have been like to go into battle. [...] One of the obstacles was a shuttle run through some hanging electrical wiring. When legging it through I took one for the team - a 'zap' on the shoulder scaring the living crap out of me and making others laugh. [...] Fears replaced with relief as we hauled each other over the finish line. Weโd made it! Knackered, dirty, cold, but gifted by a warm sense of achievement.โ
โI was the winner of Season 3, Episode 16. The experience was awesome. All the contestants and staff were very nice. After I found it I was going to be on the show I first watched every previous episode to try to determine strategies and then trained solely by swimming laps a few days a week. What you don't realize, because of editing, is that a ton of the contestants time is spent in the water, especially in the first and last rounds. [...] Also, it's filmed over the course of three days. Day 1 is round 1 and 2. Day 2 was a week later for round 3. Day (night) 3 was a couple weeks later for the final round. [...] almost all the horizontal surfaces on the obstacles are covered in lube, not just water. It made it very difficult to get traction and plant your feet.โ
