Cross the narrow stretch of water between England and France, whether by ferry, Eurostar through the Channel Tunnel, or for the adventurous, by swimming. The ferry offers dramatic white cliffs views and a sense of crossing between two distinct cultures. Swimming the channel is an extreme endurance challenge requiring months of training and official supervision.

โI got to Dover for the start of my window and ended up having to sit around for about a week due to bad weather. After quite a bit of waiting we ended up with a beautiful day. Some rough waters at the very beginning and again from hours 7-9ish, but for the most part it was fairly smooth: I ended up doing just over 25 miles of swimming. The last push into France took forever because of strong currents, but I was able to maintain a steady pace/stroke count for the entire swim and just had to be patient in closing out the last mile or two.โ
โI wasnโt immediately aware the tides were causing trouble,โ she says, but around 3 a.m. when one of her crew got in to support swim for her, it was revealed she had at least another three hours to go. โIโd expected to be done by 3 a.m., so it was a stunning blow. However, weโd come that far already, and it never crossed my mind that I wouldnโt swim until I had solid ground below my feet again,โ Thomas recounts.โ
