Experience Japan's unique pet cafe culture by visiting establishments where you can interact with cats, dogs, owls, hedgehogs, or even more exotic animals while enjoying coffee and snacks. These cafes offer therapeutic animal interaction for city dwellers who can't own pets, and each has specific rules about handling and feeding the animals. Book ahead as popular locations often have waiting lists.

βThe little pigs were full of life, super dynamic and curious. At least, we were sure they had not been sedated to be calmer! With ten persons in the room, piglets looked like to never know which way to turn and were trying a lot of different knees to find the best human pillow. It was piglets who called the shots! For that matter, some persons seemed more interesting to them: one of my friends constantly had three pigs on him, while none of them cared about me for the first 30 minutes! We noticed that they loved to put their heads on armpits.β
βAfter making payment, I was ushered to a seating area alongside the βhedgehog trenchesβ. Depending on who you visit with β if youβre in a party of two, youβll be seated at a bar counter of sorts; if you visit in a group of more than two, however, youβll be seated at a sofa area. Every person will be given a pair of gloves β the hedgehog quills are not extremely sharp but itβs always good to err on the side of caution. [...] And the fun begins! The hedgehogs feel incredibly soft to the touch, feeling somewhat like a nice little marshmallow.β
βI went for the 30 minute + hedgehog snack package which is 1630 yen. Since I was feeling a little peckish at this point, I initially wondered if the snack would be for me or the hedgehog (they also provide a free drink for their human guest) but when presented with a small tub of mealworms and tweezers, my question was answered. Iβd rather wait for my own dinner.β
