There's nothing quite like experiencing Beethoven's triumphant Ninth Symphony with its iconic 'Ode to Joy' finale performed live by a full orchestra and choir. The piece builds from intimate melodies to earth-shaking crescendos that you'll feel in your chest. Look for performances around New Year's Eve when many orchestras traditionally program this masterpiece.

The entire performance was amazing, but the last movement was something I cannot describe. I had certainly listened to the ninth several times before the concert but hearing it live was completely different. During the last movement, I was totally frozen. I sat still for more than 20 minutes without even moving a finger.

I heard it with Barenboim/Staatskapelle Berlin on two separate occasions, once in NY and once in Berlin, which were unforgettable. The true joy of symphonic music, especially when augmented by a choir, lies in the social experience of witnessing and being moved as a group by the vocal and muscle power of another group of humans pouring their souls into making incredible sounds together. Recordings remove that human connection.

My first experience with Beethoven's 9th live was singing in it. I have a voice degree from a music conservatory and that was our big conservatory concert my senior year. Chills every single time we (the choir) came in during the last movement. In every rehearsal, in every performance...just... chills.
