Hike Rainbow Mountain in Peru

Hike to 17,000 feet where mineral deposits have painted an entire mountain in vibrant stripes of red, yellow, and green - like nature's version of tie-dye. The challenging altitude and steep terrain are worth it when you reach the summit and see this geological wonder that looks too surreal to be real.

βI did the early morning tour, and while the hike was beautiful and not crowded until you get to the top, the altitude was just way too challenging for me. Even though I had been in Cusco for a while and acclimatized, that specific hike felt like a whole new level of altitude sickness. Honestly, the top of Rainbow Mountain itself didn't quite stack up to how amazing the Sacred Valley was in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, you do feel incredibly close to the mountains there, right in the thick of it, which is cool. But the top of the mountain itself felt a bit commercialized for my taste.β
βTook the shuttle very early morning from my hostel in Cusco (around 3:30am). Why this early you ask? Well, it gets packed, so if youβre the first group to get there the least crowded it will be when you reach the top. 6:30am was the time we got there and it takes around 1h30 to reach the top (depending how acclimatized and fast you are and walk. Terrain is mostly flat all the way from the parking lot, till the last 1/3 part where it gets steep + with the added bonus of the altitude, but slow and steady you get there.β
