โAs my wife and kid jumped and balanced their ways across the rocky stream, I noticed something interesting. A beautifully-sculpted, fist-sized cobble. Isn't it pretty? There's a crack running completely around the middle but it's well-cemented enough so that it doesn't come apart. The neat thing about being a geologist is that I can appreciate this rock for more than only its natural beauty. I immediately recognized it as a piece of the Manlius Limestone Formation.โ
โI am taking a Physical Geology course at Mesa College, as a pleasant diversion from the life sciences. San Diego County is chock full of fascinating rocks and minerals and interesting land forms. More than I ever imagined! On March 19th, we took a day-long field trip to the Laguna Mountains, and then the local desert. [...] This canyon was full of fascinating geological formations and types of rocks, including igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic - a little of everything we are learning about in the class at the moment.โ
โOn Saturday morning December 5, ~30 people gathered at Bellevue Pond in the Middlesex Fells for a Geology Hike sponsored by the Friends of the Fells and led by Ed Myskowski of the Peabody Essex Museum. Ed is friendly and knowledgeable, happy to share his considerable insight into the geology of New England. Before setting out he covered the basics of plate tectonics and the effects of glaciers on the New England landscape. [...] I can almost still see the swirling magma flows in this rock, and the glacial scratches.โ
