Pick a song that makes you smile and break it down into small, manageable chunks - even 15 minutes of daily practice adds up quickly. Start with simple songs that use basic chords or scales you already know. The satisfaction of playing a complete song from memory is incredibly rewarding and builds confidence for tackling more complex pieces.

β€œI had a friend show me standard chords on the guitar, teaching me how to play some obscure song I don’t recall the name of circa 1993. A few weeks later, I read a guitar article that said U2’s song β€œDesire” had a chord progression that was simple - D, A, E, A, E. I sloppily started playing those chords at a gradually faster pace over the next few days and things started to take shape. I put the studio version of the song on and could hear that I was now playing the song. I would say that was a good 2 week journey in a pre-Internet world where I would practice a couple of hours a day. There’s a 4 note solo in the song. I showed it to the same friend and he was able to figure it out in a few seconds and showed me how to play it. The song is 2 mins, 58 secs long. On the same day he showed me how to play the solo, I played along with the track and made it straight through. I imagine I did it with a few instances of sloppiness, but that’s the first song I would say I learned straight through.”

β€œI picked up a guitar for the first time since I was a teenager at the end of May. Been learning and practicing almost daily ever since, and learning pieces of songs. Finally sat down and put all the pieces together to My Own Summer (Shove It) by Deftones and rocked from start to finish after a few tries. It's an easy song, but man I felt stoked after.”
