Create your own backyard wildlife theater by building a simple feeder from recycled materials or a basic wooden design. Position it where you can watch from inside, and you'll be amazed at the variety of birds that visit—many people become amateur ornithologists after starting this simple project. Keep a journal of the species you spot.

There's an old iron hook embedded in the wall outside my window, originally part of a clothes line system, and it seemed like a great place to hang a bird feeder. The original plan was to build something conventional, but the idea of a miniature bird balcony wrapping around the corner seemed too cute to pass up. [...] This was my first outdoor project, and while I was aware of how damaging moisture can be, I definitely underestimated the roof's susceptibility to warping. I had hoped a good few layers of varnish and sealant would do the job, but not so. We had an unusually wet spring, and after enough cycles of heavy rain and baking sun, some of the roof slats have irreparably deformed. [...] Overall I'm pleased with how it went, but interested to learn what I could have done better. And, while it took a couple of months, I'm happy to say that birds are now visiting regularly.

It started two summers ago when I placed a hummingbird feeder just outside my office window. Quickly these little green birdies started dazzling everyone by there charm and beauty. You never knew when someone was just outside my window taking pictures or video taping the 10 or so hummingbirds fighting for that perfect perch. [...] I found myself with a desire to bring nature back to the office again. Sunflower seeds were an excellent tool for inviting these birds back to my office and keeping me entertained. Birds like the Black-capped Chickadee, American Goldfinch, White-breasted Nuthatch, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Tufted Titmouse and Dark Eyed Junco are now regular visitors of mine.
