“Last year, I was fortunate enough to go to Gettysburg for the reenactment that coincided with the 150th Anniversary of the battle. I would have written about it sooner, but I wanted to take some time to process everything because I took part in a lot of amazing things. They say that the battlefield is one of the most haunted places in the world and while I didn't experience anything of that nature first hand, I can certainly understand why the place has such a reputation. While we were there, we formed up as a company and marched across the battlefield in the footsteps of Pickett's Charge. I've never been in war, but it was not difficult to image the hell that it must have been for those gallant men to march across that open field with artillery and bullets raining down upon them.”
“I fled from a reenacted battle outside Fredonia, Wisconsin in 2014, and the chief officer looked up with surprise and asked, "what are you doing?" Over my shoulder, I replied, "I'm running away, it was a thing.”
“This year my family and I were able to participate in a great living history event to honor the 200th anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans (which was fought on January 8th, 1815). We drove south through Nashville (where Andrew Jackson and many of his troops came from) and got to a recreated battlefield after two days on the road. My wife and one-year old son rode with me, and generally had a great time. We met up with other folks from our reenactment group, which recreates Captain Daniel Cushing's Company of the Second United States Regiment of Artillery, who hail from the Toledo, Ohio area.”
