“I am coated in sweat. My back muscles are tight and piled like old roots, the skin on my palms rubbed a violent and peeling red. My body has been crying “Uncle!” for the past four hours, and the tree has only now made it into the ground: a skinny little sapling as needling and awkward as a pinky finger. It’s the first tree I’ve ever planted, and I feel like a total wuss.”

“The day our FUF trees arrived for planting was a turning point for 26th Street. Neighbors, who just days before had been strangers to each other, were now working together to improve the quality of their lives and to soften the gritty harshness outside their homes. Many of those who did not sign up for a tree came out that day to help, and we got to know each other that sunny Saturday afternoon, working together planting trees and establishing friendships.”
