βWe started our ride right around 17:45 off the beaten path near San Marco and sprung for our gondoliereβs longest routeβ¦ so it was more $$. But it allowed for joining the touristy itβs a small world parade past the bridge of sighs, out onto the big lagoon, Rialto, etc., but also the quieter less travelled canals as well. The real magic was being in the back canals almost alone when the church bells all rang out at 6pm for 5-10 minutes solid in the golden sunset light (our trip was at the beginning of April).β
βThe ride itself was easygoing, and seeing the gondolier balancing was really unique. Of course, the gondolier didnβt offer any commentary or singing, but honestly, this didnβt bother me because I wasnβt distracted. I wanted to soak up as much of Venice as possible, and, happily, this happened. For the same reason, I preferred to pre-book a private gondola: I wanted to enjoy the canals of Venice in silence. The floating city is mesmerizing, and seeing its buildings from the water level is breathtaking.β
βI think the experience is overrated, usually thought of as romantic, but it's not so much. The idealized image is a single gondola all alone on the artfully lit canals, but that's not the reality. The gondolier was cool, and maneuvering under the bridges was interesting, but that's about it. Underwhelming. I wander Venice at night and, other than some fancy docks, I see a lot more of this magical city on foot. Tbh, we only tried it because it's one of those things that you do once, and only in Venice.β
βThe gondola passed under a low stone bridge, its arch so close I instinctively ducked my head. On the other side, we emerged into a small piazza, where the canal widened. Children played along the waterβs edge, their laughter ringing out like bells. [...] As the sun dipped lower, the light turned amber, casting long shadows across the water. The gondolier steered us toward a quieter canal, where the only sound was the occasional splash of an oar. The stillness was intoxicating, a moment suspended in time. I leaned back, letting the rhythm of the ride lull me into a state of bliss.β
βI avoided this experience for the first three days, then on the final night we got into the gondola and went around under the moon light and buildings were all lit. It was so beautiful and moving. The price is completely worth it.β
βI lived in Venice for a short period of time in architecture grad school and have returned to visit often in the past 26 years. For most of that time I swore off riding in a gondola because I thought it was a cliche. And then I went to Venice with a friend who was going there for the first time. She convinced me to go on a ride and I was extremely reluctant. Butβ¦.I enjoyed every minute of it. It made me understand the city in ways I did not expect.β
