Brighten someone's day with an unexpected gift that shows you're thinking of them. It doesn't need to be expensive—handwritten notes, their favorite snacks, or something that reminded you of an inside joke works perfectly. The element of surprise and thoughtfulness behind it matters more than the monetary value.

“My friend is sailing this week for her birthday and I sent chocolate covered strawberries w/ sparkling cider (so she can enjoy with her kid) and some Cruise Cash. I ordered this weeks ago and scheduled it for embarkation day so she could enjoy the treats on the kickoff day and plan for the unexpected funds. I have no clue if she got it! I only got a receipt of purchase; no further updates. This is Cruise Day 2 and she hasn’t mentioned it, though she’s been texting me otherwise for both days. She would definitely mention it if she got my note! [...] Update: She got it! I finally asked her. She received the strawberries & champagne the first night but had no clue who sent them as there was no note and nobody could tell her. She didn’t know about the Cruise Cash until I told her and she looked at her account. Just beware if you ever attempt to surprise gift someone… you’ll probably have to tell them.”
“A friend I've known for 20 years, who's a single mother, the gym she worked at has been closed due to COVID-19. I used PayPal to send her a surprise gift for her birthday, about $500, to help with expenses. We've both been PayPal customers for a decade or two, and I've sent her money before. If PayPal had told me that only 20% of my gift would actually be received by the recipient, no way would I have sent the money. I assumed, like any reasonable person would, that I was simply giving a gift to a friend, and there wouldn't be any BS in the middle.”
