Soup kitchens always need volunteers to serve meals, prep food, and clean up. It's eye-opening to interact with people from all walks of life, and many volunteers find the experience humbling and perspective-changing.

โ€œFirst I felt really out of place, most of those volunteers are extroverts and I was thinking about leaving, but decided to focus on the job, and I am not gonna lie, it's a lot of work, I helped preparing the food, cleaning the place, bringing boxes and boxes of food and utensils, I am really tired, but I can't describe how good it felt helping feed those people, some of them are really fine people, educated and kind, they realize I was new and asked some questions about me that no one else did in my life.โ€

โ€œI volunteered at one in high school. My first job was to stir a huge pot of mashed potatoes. Then when people came down the line, I put a scoop of potatoes on their tray. Once everyone had gone through the line, I was given a big jug of iced tea and I went up and down the long tables and refilled glasses with the tea. Another volunteer had water and was doing the same. At the end of the meal, we had a huge dishwasher that we loaded up with the dirty trays. It was not much different to working in a buffet restaurant.โ€
