Identify a cause you're passionate about, develop a mission and strategic plan, then navigate the legal requirements to establish a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Success requires building a board of directors, creating sustainable funding sources, and developing programs that create measurable impact. Many successful charities start small, focusing on local needs before expanding their reach and influence.

People who tried this

β€œI had started another organization before from the ground up that served those who found themselves without homes and addictions. I cast the vision, trained volunteers and created a community impact nightly on the streets, literally on the ground doing the work of providing meals, support and when we could provide temporary housing. I loved that stuff. It wasn’t easy, but I saw the positive impact on people’s lives.”

β€œI didn't know anything about charities until about a year ago. As a Ukrainian that's not on the battlefield, I felt an obligation to help those that are, so ended up starting a small non-profit in the US. From a legal standpoint, it's fairly straightforward. First you register a company, then you apply for 501c3 status. You can start operating before you receive 501c3 status, which takes a few weeks/months. Total cost is about $1.5k. Fundraising – Not sure if you plan on raising capital, but I found this to be one of the most challenging parts. Even though a good chunk of our capital comes from our personal savings, about 50% was raised from our network, partnerships with other charities, PR, and various fundraising platforms (ie Benevity).”
