โThe first formal class I ever taught was a disaster. I was in a total flop sweat. It was choppy. The reviews were pretty abysmal, and deservedly so. You know why? Because I looked over the material and thought, "I know this stuff inside and out!" And I did. However, knowing a subject and teaching a subject are two vastly different animals. I vowed to never let that happen again.โ
โOn my first day meeting with the class, I was up-front with the students, confessing that my background was not up to par relative to the instructor who had just left. I informed them that I would be learning much of the content along with them, hoping to set their expectations at a reasonable level. Little did I realize that Iโd also be learning quite a bit about how I teach along the way.โ
โMy first true experience, however, came my first semester in graduate school, when I found out that I would be the Graduate Teaching Assistant (and only TA) for Introduction to Computer Security for my advisor. Iโm not 100% sure when the imposter syndrome hit, but when it did, it hit hard. This class is made up of mostly juniors, seniors, and graduate students, meaning that everyone was either my age or older. And while I did fine in the class when I took it myself, and I have been around security since forever, I just knew that the chances of people noticing that I didnโt know ish were everywhere.โ
