Among my favorites are numerous African safaris, coaching North Korea’s national ice hockey team and ringing in New Year’s Eve twice in the same year. These types of experiences have been formative and I feel fortunate to say that I could list many more. But what I’ve found to be more important are the people who have come into my life as a result of them. I remember eating four meals in my first hour in Tajikistan (I think central Asia is home to some of world’s best hospitality), and relying on the kindness of complete strangers while hitchhiking from Freetown to Conakry. Friendship is among the most indisputably valuable things in life and I wouldn’t trade the relationships I built while traveling for anything.”

“In Afghanistan, my travel buddy and I had booked a tour and had an armed guard walking around with us in Kabul. The travel books made Guyana seem really dangerous (take a taxi if only going two blocks, etc). In Luanda, Angola I had an attempted mugging right outside my hotel. Some places are just DARK at night... I fell in a hole in the sidewalk in Nairobi. Probably wouldn't have walked around there on my own at night, but was with my safari group.”
