βBut Iβll never forget the moment the San Francisco Chronicleβs first crossword puzzle broke me: a three-letter clue, 12 down, asking for βa womanβs name.β My head filled with 21st century choices: βZOE? MIA? AVA? EVA?β The correct answer was βIDA.β [...] From there I put away my pen and looked for a pencil with the biggest eraser that Ticonderoga makes. Even spending hours every week in a newspaper archive for the last 15 years didnβt prepare me for the multigenerational knowledge gap.β
βHere's my attempt! [...] It started out feeling fairly easy, but in the end there were quite a few I wasn't confident on. I annotated the clues with a checkmark for those I found easiest on the first pass, a heart for ones I really enjoyed, and a question mark for ones I found unsatisfying (either I'm still not sure of them or only sure because of the cross clues). Made a mistake on 6 down but it was ultimately satisfying since I fixed it with 22 across.β
