We walked and chatted with some of our fellow walkers, but mainly with the volunteers who cheered and encouraged us, fed us and guided us - they were amazing. In the final 10km, walking over the Gladesville Bridge, a bloke walked up next to us and we ended up chatting with him through to the finish in Kings Cross. The conversation started like any other… ‘how are you travelling, not far to go now, have you done this walk before?’. It wasn't long before it became clear that this fellow had 'inside knowledge' about Wayside Chapel - and it turned out that's because he is the Pastor and CEO - Jon Owen. It was a fascinating conversation, punctuated with the volunteers, our fellow walkers and the Saturday night revellers in the city cheering us on. We formed our own small crowd, walking up William Street towards Kings Cross, willing every traffic light to turn green on our approach.

I’ve done a large charity walk (1000’s of miles) and I’ve often thought the same way. My attitude was that the walk was something I wanted to do for personal reasons and was obviously going to require a large amount of time and commitment to complete. I felt that completing the walk as a solely personal challenge would have resulted in a benefit only to myself, but that surely I could benefit other people in some way as well. “Advertising” a charitable collection meant that any attention I received for doing my big effort event could also be used to advertise a worthy cause for donations. So for the same effort I could help other people instead of just myself. Then I decided to wear a funny outfit for the journey so that I could make passerby’s smile as well and things kept snowballing from there. [...] it was truly humbling to encounter a nation of generous people who welcomed me into their homes, fed me, and took the time to share snippets of their life and locale with me.
