Paddle through mangrove tunnels in Florida, alpine lakes in the Rockies, or quiet rivers near your city—each offers completely different scenery and wildlife. Start with calm waters and rent equipment first to find what you prefer. Bring a dry bag for your phone and snacks, and you'll discover hidden coves and wildlife viewing impossible from shore.

“Didn't get it my first time kayaking, but I remember getting it when I took a kayak up a narrow fjord in Norway. The perspective span me out, with sheer 1000m cliffs above me and like a 1000m depth below me, with little more than a few hundred metre spacing between the fjord walls. Plus I'd just gone round a big bloody cruise ship, with its bow thrusters and fog horn going, which didn't help. It's not rational, and I knew it was safe so I pressed on and it was a great paddle, but I definitely hugged the shore more than normal.”
“Honestly, I was surprised at how much room I had in my kayak! There are two storage units on the front and the back of the kayak. I didn't realize that the storage space goes into the very front and the back of the pointy ends of the kayak, so that was nice! I also used the space behind my seat to store items. I had all my gear and food inside dry bags and I still had room to spare. In fact, I ended up bringing too much food and gear, if you can believe it! I also brought a water container that I'd tie down on the back end of the kayak. I'd fill it a little with water using my water filter after I set up camp. For a four-day trip, it was more than enough room to comfortable camp and hike in between paddling trips. Had I known camping and hiking using a kayak was possible like this, I would have looked into it a lot sooner. Your options for going to more secluded places become much less limited.”
