“yesterday i had the idea to take me and my brothers out horseback riding for the first time, so we went to a ranch that offered trail rides. i was terrified at first and very vigilant of the horses' behavior because i kept hearing huffs from the horses around me. my number one concern was getting kicked or bit. the guide puts me on one of the horses, *Trigger*, and gives me only 3 basic instructions: use the rope to move the horse right, left, or up to stop. Trigger starts going up the trail and everything goes smoothly. for .5 seconds. each of our horses stopped to drink some water, and every horse but mine kept moving after a few gulps and a push from the rider. mine wouldn't then the guide tells me i need to kick the horse as hard as i can to get him to move and that seemed so counterintuitive. i didn't want to hurt the horse but each time i would kick the horse the guide would tell me to kick harder. it was only when the guide came to my side and slapped my horse that Trigger started to move again.”
