Transform kitchen scraps and yard waste into rich, dark soil amendment through the fascinating process of controlled decomposition. Build a simple three-bin system using pallets or wire mesh, then layer green materials (vegetable scraps) with brown materials (dry leaves, paper) while maintaining proper moisture and turning regularly. Within 6-12 months, you'll have nutrient-rich compost that transforms any garden while reducing household waste.

βI have access to my own yard for the first time, and while doing some spring cleaning and pruning, I ended up with a lot along of vegetable residue. I remembered my grandfather adding to his backyard compost crate, and decided to do the same! My yard is small, so I got the cheapest composter available, and started reading up on this subreddit! This pile is one week old, still adding to it, it's mostly brown yard waste, with some greens and coffee grounds. I turned it with a crowbar (a compost fork is out of budget rn), and plan on doing so again next week.β
βThis is my first time doing making one, Iβm planning on using it to make compost for my flowers. Theyβre in pots, so Iβm going to do the typical compost method of 50% browns and 50% greens and Iβm going to be mixing it once a week or every other week. Although Iβm wondering if I added too many holes in the bottom or too much, so any advice is welcomed. Itβs my first time making my own compost in general so I hope I chose the right method too.β
