Create better drainage and easier maintenance with a raised bed garden using cedar boards or composite materials. The elevated design reduces back strain, improves soil control, and extends the growing season slightly. Choose a sunny location and fill with quality soil mix—your future vegetable-growing self will thank you.

I’m a total newb. I’ve been wanting to start my own garden for a long time, and I love the look of raised beds. Figured I’d dive in and build my first one. I went with a 4’x8’ bed that’s 22” tall. [...] Lessons Learned - Wood is heavy. - I’ll probably go with 4x4s for corner support instead of 2x4s next time. - I’ll pay up for cedar next time - build very close to where you want the bed to live - build on level ground. My level was used, but it’s still crooked - 22” is a lot deeper than you think - wood is heavy - build in the fall, when it’s nice and cool, and you have more time to fill the bed with stuff until spring. - it’s fun building stuff

Building the raised bed was a long afternoon project with indispensible help from my dad and Husband Peter. My garden was complicated by the fact that I was building it on a hill, but if you have a flat area it will be even easier for you. [...] This was, I admit a bit cumbersome to set up, and some bunnies still did get in and eat my bean sprouts, but other than that it was effective for a while.
