Use acrylic paints to create simple designs – mandalas, inspirational words, or cute animals work well – then seal them for weather protection. Hide them in parks, along walking trails, or near benches where people might need a smile. It's a guerrilla art movement that spreads joy while letting you practice painting skills.

“One of mine and my daughter's new favorite hobbies is hunting for painted rocks and painting and hiding our own for others to find. [...] We paint a lot of different things on our rocks: flowers, hearts, butterflies, uplifting words and phrases. I've made a couple Minions and some Harry Potter themed rocks. I have found I really enjoy painting rocks, it's a bit therapeutic. Now we keep a small basket of finished rocks on a shelf near the front door and anytime we're headed out somewhere that might be good for hiding some, we grab a few. Popular places include parks, playgrounds, walking trails, and shopping plazas.”
“It seemed pretty straightforward, so I gathered up my craft paints and other supplies and got to work. First, though, I researched the art form, such that it is. I’m crafty, but I’m not a visionary in the art department. I needed ideas, so I searched for painted rocks online and got a wealth of them. Using what supplies I had and my limited painting skill, I finally got to work “interpreting” the marvelous rock designs I’d found on the web. I left my first rock gift at a friend’s mailbox. Lily was excited. On day two, she texted me and said a little girl had picked it up and looked at it. Then she walked off with it!”
