Stand before the actual stone that unlocked ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, making it one of archaeology's greatest detective stories. This granite slab holds the same decree in three scripts, giving scholars the key to reading pharaonic writing for the first time in over a millennium. The British Museum houses incredible artifacts, but seeing this particular stone feels like touching the moment when lost civilizations started speaking to us again.

β€œThe first thing to see for us was the Rosetta Stone. I’ve been wanting to see that for a long time and was really excited to finally be able to see it in person. Predictably, on a Friday afternoon, the museum was pretty packed and the Rosetta Stone exhibit was no exception. It was difficult to get any decent photographs due to some tourists who allowed their LED screens from their audio guides to reflect off the glass right in the middle of the stone. I was tempted to ask some to simply flip it around but there appeared to be language barriers and I figured I’d just wait it out. After a couple of minutes I was able to get close enough to try and get some shots. Luckily, the stone is huge so it’s not hard to get a view of it, just be ready for crowds.”

β€œI think I have found the solution to the recurring problem I have had with British Museum exhibitions being crowded to the extent of visits become uncomfortable – booking the first slot of the day. Suddenly I was able to wander around the space freely, read panels without queuing and most magically get to stand in front of the Rosetta stone without jostling.”
