See the sunrise over Haleakala

“I did a run/hike from the summit starting in the dark last year I went about 2km down Sliding Sands trail and stopped to take in the sunrise, and while it is not the same as the summit, I can still say it was unequivocally the best sunrise I have ever seen and I was totally, completely, alone in the quietest silence I've ever experienced. It was not difficult to manage the terrain with a simple flashlight or headlamp.”

“It would be beautiful and unique! My husband and I have been there a few times at sunrise. We got there a bit late the first time and a ranger was walking right where we parked. The viewpoint by the visitor center was packed 6 people deep. The ranger gave us a tip to walk down sliding sands trail a bit and there will be no one there. So we did. Unobstructed views all by ourselves. [...] I recommend warm clothes and hat, a blanket to sit on while you wait for it to rise and flashlight for each of you for walking on the trail.”

“I’m sure there isn’t a bad seat in the house, but we really enjoyed it from the visitor center. About 15 minutes before the actual sunrise, a ranger came out and gave a quick talk — and as the sun was rising, he and a few native Hawaiians did an oli (a traditional Hawaiian chant to welcome the sun).”
