Send a message to your future self to open in 10 years

“If I am reading this on my 29th birthday 10 years from now, I will probably want to write a letter in return to my 18 year old self, wanting her to know all the answers to the questions she asked, all the questions she was never able to figure out until after, just to give her no longer existant 18 year old self some reassurance of the things that happened and how they turned out. [...] There is a gap of 10 years waiting to be filled up. 10 years for you to do what you want. It is all up to you... I could spend a whole day typing into this thing, thinking of things to say... and I think that after I send it, I will have a lot of regrets of what I didn't say and what I forgot to include. But it's something that is done and over with and just has to be dealt with.”

“The first letter I wrote to my future self was prompted by an event for Resident Assistants at my university at the start of the spring semester in 2013, my senior year. The letter was to be collected by the speaker and handed back at the end of the semester. After writing this first letter I decided that maybe this would be good and fun. I was about to graduate, head off to grad school for my PhD, and who knows where I'd be in 5 or 10 years. So I then sat down and wrote myself two one-page letters to my future self that would be opened after I graduate with my PhD and another the other 10 years from then. [...] Over the next 3-4 years I continued the annual tradition of writing a letter to my future self to be opened in 10 years time.”
