Perfect way to learn rhythm, coordination, and maybe meet new people. Most studios offer drop-in beginner classes where instructors break down basic steps patiently. You'll be surprised how quickly you pick up the fundamentals, and it's great exercise disguised as fun.

“I get paired with a woman. She grabs my hands and we get started dancing. I get the first part kinda okay but not great then blow the parts I didn’t practice. She gets visibly frustrated and just stops dancing, taking a few steps away from me. I apologize to her for being new and not knowing the steps well. She doesn’t say anything and just ignores me. I turn to watch the instructor and try to pick up the next steps. [...] The next several partners give me a fair shot and are patient with me. I’m also telling each one this is my first class ever and pre-apologize for messing up and thank them when we switch again. These folks are generally nice.”
“So it was kind of a miracle that I fell in love with salsa and merengue when I lived in the Caribbean for a few years in my early 30s. Since I never had dance classes, I did not know the ‘official’ moves, but I learned to compensate by using one of my strengths from other life areas: improvising. I loved this challenge of learning something new and apparently difficult. My dance partners complimented me for being able to dance without any training. I enjoyed being led by a man. Dancing was the only time that I did not have to think and be the ‘strong, independent woman’ I normally was. Dancing forced me to be in the moment. Not thinking, just feeling. Knowing the next move before my dance partner even initiated it. The flow that was thus created, felt like magic…”
“I was so bad in the beginning that my very first teacher told me dance probably wasn’t for me (I think they misjudged that one). At a minimum, I certainly wasn’t a fast-rising talent. But, I stuck around. I worked at it. One day (about a year later), I could finally do Cuban motion in my Salsa. My arms still alternated between looking like rabid velociraptors or dead fish – but I could do hip stuff.”
