Take the Glacier Express train across Switzerland

“Knowing I would get glare off the windows, I had to document at least portions of the trip with photos. However, I looked like a jack-in-the-box jumping up every time something amazing was ahead – only to make it to the window in time for yet another tunnel! Did I mention we traveled through 91 tunnels?! There was such a diversity of terrains, including mountain forests, alpine meadows, and too many lakes, glaciers, peaks, waterfalls, and streams to count! We also passed the arches of the Landwasser Viaduct, the Rhine Gorge – known as the Grand Canyon of Switzerland, and we cut through the deepest cleft valley in Switzerland, the Nikolai Valley. We also experienced all types of weather – from bright sunshine to rain, sleet, snow, and total fog with zero visibility.”

“So, here’s the thing: while the big glass windows of the Glacier Express are nice for wistful glances at the views outside, they are in reality hilariously terrible for photography. Any photo you try to take (unless strategically angled) will end up with a reflection of the lights, your seat, etc. If you are taking the Glacier Express purely for photography purposes, odds are you will be very disappointed. Really hot temperatures: Again, the Glacier Express’ panorama cars have these beautiful giant windows which sound like a very promising idea, but let me tell you, when the sun is shining inwards, it turns the carriage into a boiling hot death machine. So, take note of this if your body overheats with the fervour of a menopausal woman’s (like mine!!). Luckily I dressed in layers so could adjust accordingly.”
