Visit the cockpit of a commercial airplane

Ask politely at the gate during boarding or speak with flight attendants - many airlines occasionally allow passengers to briefly visit the cockpit before or after flight (not during). Aviation museums also offer cockpit tours of retired aircraft where you can sit in the pilot's seat and touch all the controls. It's fascinating to see the complexity of instruments that guide these massive machines through the sky.
