adventurewater-sportsnature
Swimming alongside the world's largest fish creates a humbling and magical experience as these gentle giants glide past with surprising grace. Whale sharks show no fear of divers, often approaching closely enough to see their intricate spotted patterns. The Maldives, Philippines, and Mexico offer the most reliable encounters.

βI looked around frantically and for a moment I thought Iβd missed my chance. Then, emerging out of the blue, I saw it. And I understood that scream. While they may be gentle giants, they are still giants, and even this one, one the smaller side, was larger than any living thing I had ever seen. But it had an even bigger presence, and I felt myself tearing up in my mask.β
βOn the morning of the dive, I had such mixed emotions from nerves to excitement but one thing was for certainβ¦. I was jumping in to that ocean no matter what. It was quite a wakeup call as the fresh ocean splashed across my face at 7am and just as I did, there out of the deep dark blue, several shadows started to approach us. It wasnβt long before we were surrounded by seven of the worldβs most gentle giants! Iβd watched numerous wildlife documentaries about Whale Sharks and knew they could grow up to 40ft, but nothing prepared me for the sheer size and grace of these magnificent creatures. I had to keep reminding myself to breathe!β
βHad the best experience of my diving life at south ari atoll with a whale shark- just our boat there (less than a dozen divers) and over 20 minutes just chilling while the shark insisted on chasing our bubbles and following us around. We kept having to swim away from her to avoid breaking the Maldivian law on how close you can get to whale sharks!β
