Clothing donations clear your space while helping others, but be strategic about where you give. Homeless shelters need warm coats and sturdy shoes, while job placement centers want professional attire—call ahead to ask what they need most, and your castoffs become someone else's confidence boost.

“Clothes have a sentimental value for me and bring up a lot of nostalgia. I recently went through all of mine with my boyfriend’s help and ended up donating 5 bags of clothes I no longer wear and one big box of random things (electronics, jewellery, bags/purses, shoes, etc). I cried after we dropped them off at the donation centre, but like my bf said, « You’re sad now, and I get it, it’s normal, but just think of all the people you’re helping out with 5 bags of clothes! » And he’s right. 5 days later, I’m loving having space in my drawers and closet and I’m no longer upset about it all.”
“Nowadays (although still fairly broke), I give nice, new-looking work clothes to organisations helping women find employment. Sportswear I don’t need and spirts gear like climbing shoes or helmets or what have you, I give to places that either distribute them to kids who need them, or places that lend them out for free. I also give my friends and family a fair bit. BUT mostly, I donate them. I’m a bit choosy about which organisation I donate to, because a lot of donated clothes are just shipped off to developing countries with no plan for distribution, and become a waste problem there. My advise would be to cut the cord. I may have loved an item, but if it doesn’t get worn, that’s just another thing I need to keep clean and moth free. I’m not Smaug, I don’t need piles of the stuff.”
