βI drove the Arrows A17 (ex-Jos Verstappen, but in Hillβs 1997 livery) with LRS at the Las Vegas road course many years ago. [...] when I got in the F1 car and trundled down the pit lane in first gear it immediately felt like a different world. I was sitting right on the tarmac; it felt like my butt was scraping the ground. There was no suspension movement. Out on the track, you barely had to turn the wheel, and the gear shifts were lighting fast and a bit violent. We were told to make sure and get our moneyβs worth on the straights, so I did. I made sure my foot was flat to the floor and I pulled through all the gears. The brakes are insane. Of course, for cornering none of us were anywhere near what the car was capable of. It was a total blast and I have even more respect for the few pilots who get to drive these for a living.β
βI've done 10 laps Formula Renault + 10 Laps F1 at Mangy Cours with this mob. [...] I've been chasing the adrenaline rush from accelerating a formula 1 car for the first time ever since that day. Once you experience the insane shock of being pushed back into the seat from flooring the throttle and then naturally you start shifting gears up until you're in 6th gear going flat out down the straight you take a moment and say to yourself..."holy shit, I'm really doing this..f*ck, this is amazing.....ah shit hairpin"....stand on the brake pedal, OMG!! f*cking hell ... the brakes are INSANE!!!...ok down to 1st gear turn. Now accelerate again ... OMG ..that acceleration... i need this every second of my life. So you warm up the tires and brakes, start pushing a little bit and you realize how easy and difficult it is to drive a F1 car. [...] The last 10%, that take balls, huge big massive balls to commit and it's both truly the greatest thing in the world and the most terrifying thing in the world.β
βIf weβd had another three laps we would have hammered harder. As it was we did get oversteer exiting one of Thermalβs second-gear hairpins. We caught it with some countersteer and by easing off the gas before powering off down the short straight. [...] But we still wanted to get all three laps with some sense of the capability of this car. With more time a driver certainly could have experienced more of the braking and more of the lateral gs. As it was, yes, this was pretty thrilling, but no, it was nowhere near the limits of the car. Who jumps into an F1 car for the first time in their life and is immediately at the limit? No one, thatβs who.β
