Street tacos in Mexico are a revelation—small corn tortillas with perfectly seasoned meat, fresh onions, cilantro, and salsa that puts American versions to shame. Look for busy stalls with high turnover, try varieties like al pastor, carnitas, or barbacoa, and embrace the authentic experience of eating standing up at plastic tables with locals.

“Exposed lightbulbs hanging precariously from a single wire are always an indicator of good food, and this taco stand that I randomly found across the street from my hotel here in Mexico City could not exemplify that more. Actually, it was more of a minivan than a stand, where they just opened up the tailgate and set up a grill. Simply tell them your choice of meat, and then pile on your choice of condiments from the spread along the side of the van. Perfect...my three pork tacos, bristling with fat, all went down in the blink of an eye.”
“Randomly picked a stand run by nice Señor y Señora. We ordered just one taco each because we weren’t really hungry. I asked the señor, “Habla ingles?” because I wanted to ask him more questions and he replied, “Si, poquito.” Unfortunately he didn’t understand my question, “What meat is this?” A customer sitting next me explained it was braised beef and very delicious. [...] I didn’t order but the señora gave me a cup of consome and told me “Vitamina (I believe).” I said, “Mi gusta” and my husband corrected me, “Me gusta.” She smiled back to us. I am so glad we had an authentic moment in Mexico at the end of trip.”
