Carve down massive sand dunes that reach 750 feet high in this unique national park. The sand stays cool even in summer, and you can rent boards at nearby shops. Best conditions are after recent rain when the sand is firmer.

βWhile it might be tempting to take on the tallest dunes, practice on the smaller ones close to the main parking area. The sand at the base is softer and the gentler runouts can slow you down. After sledding through a few dunes, I decided to try on a higher dune that had a razor thin ledge. Because I didnβt properly center the board, I went backwards and tumbled down to the base. I wasnβt hurt badly β a sore shoulder β but there was sand in every conceivable part of my body! And if I had been on a higher dune, I couldβve injured myself.β
βWhen my niece was 12, I took her to the Great Sand Dunes and we walked to the top of the Front Dune. She weighed maybe half what I did and didn't even sink in to the sand while I slid back on every step. She scampered up the ridge lines like a mouse, puzzled why I was taking so longβ¦β
