Through the sliding glass door of my jungle hotel room, I could see my breakfast had arrived. A plate of huevos rancheros was waiting in the pool. Not by — in. A woven basket tray bobbed in the water, topped with a decadent spread begging to be photographed. At the Yellow Nest, a boutique hotel a short drive from the beachfront in this Caribbean hot spot for influencers, my floating breakfast included the Mexican egg dish, black coffee, a tropical juice, half a bagel with sliced fruit and granola, fake flowers, and an array of condiments. To determine which camp I fell in, I lowered myself into the pool, moving carefully to avoid any food splashing or tray tipping. The water came up to chest height. I dried my hands and hovered over the lip of the basket to eat. Inevitably, water dripped into my coffee cup. A few morsels may have gone for a swim. The huevos rancheros were wonderful. Their floating delivery was not.

Although the staff would have come back in a heartbeat, I was embarrassed to ask. So I moved the tray myself—putting my back out, spilling my champagne, drenching my croissants with orange juice and creating some home-brew cafe au chlorine in the process. I then posed for a few photos, attempting to ignore the rumbling in my stomach and the chlorine on my tongue. Then I realised: I was missing the point of a floating breakfast. Enjoyment. I ate a few bites of my omelette, gobbled my Smoothie Bowl, and waded around trying to look cool (but looking more like a pale, elderly man with a mobility aide).

The next morning, the “floating breakfast” came and I was initially pretty shocked by how big the float is. The food itself of course came warm and nice in a basket. All the food were wrapped up including the drinks. The server will arrange the food in a very nice way inside the float and then put the float onto your villa’s swimming pool. The final product is shown here but honestly it was not easy for him to do so. In the end, two of us have to float the basket to avoid making a mess. The food was not important. We just spent the next 10 mins taking photos and videos… all for social media reasons.
