Learn sign language.

“The first time I used my new language skills to talk to them was amazing! They went far faster than I could keep up with but once they realised how little I actually knew they were patient and over the coming months we had some great conversations. After leaving the pub I decided I wanted to carry on learning and my new employer paid for me to carry on so I did BSL levels 1 and 2 and aimed at becoming a sign language interpreter.”

“I learned sign language by myself with a combination of music and interaction. It doesn't feel the same as learning a foreign language IMO. It's more like learning a choreography, but with words. The nice thing about sign is if you learn the alphabet, and you have someone to 'talk' to, then you can easily fill in your gaps by finger spelling. :) The other person may give you the hand sign for the word you wanted to say. I had a lot of fun with sign though. I learned you can express a change in volume by raising or lowering your hand.”

“In my first deaf batch, fifteen students were there. I only knew the signs whatever I learned through the website. But I was not aware of the signs for financial-related concepts. I learned a few from my colleagues and tried a few signs on my own. The deaf candidates corrected my mistakes and helped me in learning new technical signs. I was open to learn from my students and that’s how I started my journey with Persons with Hearing Impairment.”
