Community cleanups provide meaningful exercise through constant movement, bending, and lifting while improving your local environment. The varied motions work different muscle groups as you pick up litter, pull weeds, and organize materials. Join organized events or start your own—you'll be surprised how much difference a small group can make.

For the squats I have time (am retired but started during lunch breaks while working from home) Sense of accomplishment It’s a positive help to my community Fresh air and sunshine It’s a great workout and free; I get warmed up and stay toasty warm in the coldest weather Very slowly getting to know the community (seen as a person who might be a little different but means well and makes a small difference)

This past Sunday, I volunteered for neighborhood clean up day through my youngest son’s school. Out of all my previous volunteer efforts, trash clean up was a first for me. [...] One thing was apparent; you don’t recognize how much trash lies on the street until you pick it up. Hub caps, cigar wrappers, plastic bottles, and beer cans filled my bag half way in no time. Items clearly missed by the driving eye en route to my son’s school daily. Each item picked by the grabber and placed in the bag sent a surge of accomplishment to my brain. Here I was on a beautiful sunny Sunday, my only off day, picking up trash.
