They told me they’d help me make a character and to ask anything no matter how trivial. Well, folks, for the next two hours of our three hours slotted to do our session, they helped me make my first character: an elf fighter focused on archery. I wanted to stay relatively simple for my first go at this, and I like bows and arrows. From the reaction of my DM, I apparently got excellent rolls for stats. I didn’t have any background or alignment yet, that would come later. For now they showed me equipment, traits/abilities, how rolling worked, and we started up in a tavern where I bought the whole place a round of beer cause I was feeling quite generous. [...] It was so much fun, and I enjoyed playing with my two guild mates [...] and my DM who did all sorts of fun voices. I’m feeling so much better about it now, and I’m going to fill in the rest of my character this week!

I never expected that creating a character would be an experience that I would almost become obsessed over and I even created an entire backstory to my character. But I’ve taken my indulgence in my character even further because while playing I’ve even started to adopt the personality and feelings of my half dragon character. I never thought that I would adopt a character in this way but becoming a half dragon has been an easy transition. Everyone in my group has made a similar assimilation into their characters so acting out the character is even more infectious.

When I started playing D&D, I was suddenly dedicating one night a week to a different kind of storytelling—the kind of fun, no-pressure improvisation with friends that I hadn’t done since I was a kid playing make believe. [...] In D&D, the Dungeon Master gives the players a starting plot and a few points of conflict. You play by making decisions in character. At any moment, you can decide what action your character will take. [...] With a single roll, the plot can change in all sorts of unexpected ways.
