Hunt for diamond-in-the-rough furniture on online marketplaces and transform it into beautiful, valuable pieces. This treasure hunting approach combines bargain shopping with restoration skills, often turning $20 finds into $200 statement pieces. Look for solid wood construction under ugly paint or worn finishes.

โI found this old chest of drawers on Craigslist, the asking price was reasonable so I went out to take a look. It was a little rough looking in person but had some potential. The drawer joints are dovetail, likely machined but probably an early 20th Century piece. I offered $120 and the sale was made. On the way home, I stopped off at the hardware store and picked up some denature alcohol and lacquer thinner. From the looks of it, there were several layers of finish over the tiger oak and my guess was lacquer, shellac, or some combination thereof. I pulled the drawers and removed all hardware. Then, after testing a small area on the chest I found that a 50/50 mixture of denatured alcohol and lacquer thinner did the trick. I proceeded to apply the mixture with a paint brush and superfine steel wool. After a couple hours the piece was stripped.โ
