โI started my flock in 2021. In spring of 2022, I sheared them for the first time. I wanted to shear them personally for several reasons, and I did a lot of research and bought a pair of nearly unused power shears from the shepherd who sold me my lambs. It went okay, though I incurred a vet bill because of a bad cut. Lessons learned and everyone healed just fine. [...] I started doing some experimental clips, unrestrainted, while hanging out with my sheep and they tolerated it variably. Eventually I decide to go for it. Instead of wrestling the sheep the entire time, I kinda pinned each to the ground with my legs/bodyweight and went about the clipping. They didn't complain much, honestly. More importantly, I wasn't injuring them at all.โ
โThe sheep accepted the shearing pretty well after it noticed that it felt quite nice. Towards the end she was lying on her side, with her eyes closed and resting her head on the ground. Like a dog receiving belly rubs. I had help with handling the sheep though, because it takes a while to get a hand of the shearing process. It also took a long time, 1,5 hours... The next one is going to be faster, only three sheep left to shear. This was my first time shearing after all, and I chose the tamest sheep for the trial.โ
