Keep it small and flexible—choose shorter books or even long articles to start, and focus more on great discussion than rigid analysis. Pick a cozy venue and encourage everyone to bring snacks, because the best book clubs are really about connecting with friends over stories and ideas.

“Earlier this year, two of my friends, Olivia and Ava, and I started a little book club fully on a whim. The three of us are all avid readers, but with the busyness of life, it’s often hard to find the time and motivation to do so. I know for myself its been hard since I work two jobs and am a full-time student (not to mention how my ADHD can make it difficult to focus for long periods of time). Our first book took us about two months to finish, considering that I was finishing spring quarter and the book is almost 900 pages. Olivia and I picked up the audiobook version, while Ava stuck with physical copies. We’d meet after finishing each part of the book, talking about our theories, what we liked and what we thought about the direction it was headed. As we neared the end of the book, we discussed what we would pick next.”
“I was talking to a couple friends and we discussed wanting to start a book club in hopes of it motivating us to read more because we wanted to get back into reading again. I thought this was a great idea and we found a couple other people to join us. Throughout the whole process, I had to lead everything. What book ideas do you have? "Idc, up to you!" When do you want to meet? "Whenever!" What time do you want to meet? "Whenever!" Where do we want to meet? Didn't get a response for that one. We finally set up a date to meet after about a week and a half of me asking. Since I was the one making decisions for the group up until that point, I decided to wait and see if anyone would reach out to confirm the plans. No one did. We were supposed to meet a week ago.”
