Swim in underground freshwater pools formed by collapsed limestone caves, creating ethereal swimming holes with crystal-clear water and dramatic stalactites overhead. The Yucatan Peninsula has thousands of these natural pools, many connected by underground river systems. The interplay of sunlight filtering through openings above and the cool, clear water below creates an almost magical swimming experience.

βBy the way, the water is FRESH. And by fresh I mean, it really makes you feel alive, and by alive I mean itβs freakin cold. Itβs not freezing. But if you go after a night of rain, going waist deep will make you do that thing when you raise you arms and shoulders trying to get away from the water the further you go in. But itβs spectacular. Itβs like taking the freshest swim of your life. Itβs like, βYes, THIS is where I should be.β
βI wish I had brought goggles but regardless, the colors are unbelieveable. I opened my eyes underwater and you can see bright shades of green and blue with the sunshine gilstening through the water creating a kaleidoscope effect. You can even pretend youβre Indiana Jones and go explore the caves and caverns along the edges.β
βStill, we donned our life jackets, jumped into the cool water, and paddled our way past the mass of wiggly humanity out to the middle where we could relax a little and enjoy the experience. After a few minutes, we decided weβd done all the enjoying of the experience we wanted, and paddled back into the swarm of people to get out. The hardest part of the whole swim was waiting for a turn on the ladder to climb back out.β
