food-and-drinkadventure
Sea urchin has a creamy, custard-like texture with an intense oceanic flavor that's both sweet and briny. It's prized in Japanese cuisine as uni and often served raw on sushi or pasta. The bright orange color and unusual texture can be challenging, but the rich, complex flavor is unforgettable once you acquire the taste.

โHad it twice in Tokyo. First time, there was A LOT in the gunkan maki. Lot maybe too much. The folks we were sitting next to at the bar described the texture but it still caught me off guard. It basically exploded in my mouth - the creaminess combined with how cold it was almost made my gag. Second time was much better. Loved the flavor and the texture wasnโt as off putting. I actually enjoyed. Slightly sweet, a little salty, but overall very good.โ
โTried it three times at three different price points in sushi restaurants in Japan last month. First time ever was in a cheap Kaiten sushi and I found it disgusting. Second time was in a fairly pricey omakase sushi spot. I was legit scared of eating it but it was delicious. Super rich and buttery. Third time was in a mid-price sushi lunch set place and it was just alright.โ
โThis made me nervous to say the least, but having already given up $10 for this so-called treat, I had no choice but to venture on, plunging my fork into the squishy reproductive tissue. I doubt youโll be shocked to find out sea urchin did, in fact, taste like the ocean it was caught in. And it had the always sought-after soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture.โ
