Try Raw Oysters

food-and-drinkluxury
Raw oysters are briny, slippery, and taste like the ocean in the best way possible. The texture can be challenging for newcomers, but the fresh, mineral flavor is incredible when they're high quality. Start with smaller varieties and add lemon or mignonette sauce to ease into the experience.

โSo, as the idiot (or not) I am, I ventured to try some raw oysters, curiosity got me. And surprisingly, I liked them! I was pleasantly surprised by them. At first I was scared, the smell was very intimidating. But, the white meat was very sweet (not in the way crustaceans are) and very salty (seawater-y), the texture wasn't too bad. I shuddered when I popped it in my mouth, but then I bit down and I realized It was silky and pleasant. It's a delicious little treat! Sure, it did have that "seafood" flavour I hate, but only as an aftertaste. So it was worth it.โ
โI remember being a little nervous because a decade ago I gave a canned oyster a try and after being severely disappointed I had a hard time imagining a raw one being any good. I recently felt the urge to try something new, and pictures of oyster platters looked so darn pretty. It was only half a year ago when I gave them a go for the first time (raw) but as they say these days: I was shook. It was a delicately briney Pink Moon oyster from P.E.I. The descriptions I had read online suddenly made sense. It was like tasting the essence of the sea. I was hooked and now I think about them often. A little lemon and I'm ready to rock and roll.โ
โI've been to J's Oyster before but I'd never eaten their title dish. The raw oyster has always freaked me out. I don't even order sushi with raw fish in it (avocado cucumber rolls for life!) But last night, I decided to say yes to something I would normally turn down and tried a raw oyster. The flavor wasn't nearly as offensive as I thought it might be. I was with an oyster slurping professional, so I knew exactly how to prepare it for the best experience. My tip for first time oyster slurpers: Go with someone who has eaten oysters before. You don't want to mess this up. Also, there's no shame in shoving a handful of potato chips into your mouth after your first one. The flavor is unique, and not offensive at all, but the ocean-y flavor accents and textures may catch you off guard.โ
