“Time felt fake in Iceland, so my fiancé and I took a hike at midnight to Fjaðrárgljúfur last week. Goodness gracious, we saw so many beautiful sights in Iceland, but this might take the cake in its surreality and serendipitous timing. We woke up from a nap and kind of stumbled out of our cabin to visit the canyon. We were the only visitors at the time. Pretty sure we saw huldrefolk peeking out from behind the craggy cliffs when we waved goodbye to this majestic place. [...] I'd say it was a 5-6 as a person who is healthy, but doesn't hit the gym regularly. The trail is rocky and uphill with some steeper sections. I had some minor knee pain on the way down.”
“We got to the parking area around 9:30 am, already packed with tour buses, and started walking toward the bridge. Within minutes, the canyon just opened up in front of us. Moss-covered cliffs curved and twisted for what felt like forever, with the Fjaðrá river flowing gently down below. Standing on that bridge, we finally got the full scale of it. The canyon is about 100 m (330 ft) deep and stretches nearly 2 km (1.2 mi) long, which makes the view even more impressive. It was stunning.”
