After a little time wandering around the team bus area, we grabbed lunch and walked around Lille (a lovely small city) and made our way to the 1km-to-go marker to camp out for the finish. This is when we truly felt the Tour energy: the caravan fired up the crowd, followed by cars and motorbikes flying past. People were banging on the barriers, singing, and soaking in the excitement. Then—zoom!—the riders blasted by. The adrenaline rush was epic. I grabbed a few shots but mostly put the camera down to just experience the moment.

I saw the Tourmalet and Mur de Péguère during the 2012 tour. It was an insanely memorable experience. The caravans, the ambiance, the cheering the riders as they suffer up the slope. All of it was amazing. The less amazing thing was getting out. If you don’t stay near where you watch, that means getting stuck in a sea of traffic trying to leave at the same time. We learned our lesson on that the first time, so we parked down the mountain a bit to try to walk out of the worst traffic jams.

Saw Isola Stage Friday, Nice stage Saturday and TT sunday. Love the trip, but it was really exhausting. So much traffic, so much driving (from nice) and many wrong decision on our side. For the future I’d try to camp out the day before for sure or leave WAY earlier than you think. Vibes are immaculate though, exactly what I had imagined watching the Tour for 25 years.
