QBasic. Somewhere in the early 90ies we had those magazines with game listings in BASIC you could copy so you would have a really simple game. They were always quite disappointing but by debugging the code and looking at the built-in help I learned enough to start making small games myself.

BASIC on my TI calculator in high school. I made programs to make homework and tests easier. So I guess my advice is find a problem you actually want to solve and then learn how to solve it with programming. Instead of just doing tutorials and reading books, actually try to make something you'll find useful.
