After 30 minutes of this, just like every other time over the past month, I felt like I was done. I would usually stop within a few minutes of this, barely managing 3.5k in 35 minutes. But today, I got back to a slower pace whenever I felt like walking. I wasn’t actually facing any breathing problems today because of this slow pace, though my legs were absolutely killing me. This allowed me to somehow reach 4k in around 40 minutes. At this point, my feet (especially the edges where I’ve developed callouses), calves, knees, thighs, lower back, and biceps (!) were hurting. Then it happened. I don’t know how, but I increased my pace. I was almost flying (not really, but it felt like that, all right)! Mind you, I still ensured that I was taking small steps - I was just taking these small steps much faster. I was able to fight through all the pain and felt like I could keep going for another 10 minutes! Maybe it was the adrenaline of being 1km away from something that I’ve wanted for so long, or of seeing myself cross the 40 minute mark for the first time. I’ve heard people on this subreddit talk about this feeling, but never identified with it. Until now. I realised that I could hit 5k right now. And I did. I immediately stopped after 5k though, because I did not want to hurt myself. Walked back to my apartment like an absolute stud, ate a packet of cashews and an apple like it’s nothing.

Even with all the walking since October.... and increased walking and hiking in March (over 50 miles and 25 hours), I still found myself worn out at the end of the race and coming close to vomiting at the very end.... the feeling where you've given it all you can give it and your lungs are coming up your throat. But, thankfully, my lungs and my stomach stayed in place and I didn't puke, upchuck or vomit at the end of my first 5K.
