“I designed and sewed my own Eid (holy day for Muslims like thanksgiving) dress and I’m so excited to show the results because I feel like I improved A LOT. The red dress in the last picture is the dress I made last year for Eid. This year my dress looks way more well fitting, has more details and better sleeves. Fits way better overall! Not gonna lie I didnt sleep more than 2 hours a day before Eid so I could finish the dress but I feel like it completely worthed it. I tend to do things very late lol. I know the skirts ends are raw but I’ll overlock them this week at my sewing course. Because I didn’t have time to do so. The doodle was my design idea but I changed some of it and I’m overall way happier with the end result. Especially the sleeves I liked how balloon sleeves look on me. And at first I used a different lace but it was too thick and looked like curtains so I bought more expensive and thinner lace that has these small bow design which looked way better than the first one. Made me feel like princess. Unfortunately the muslin fabric I ordered was almost completely see through but I didn’t have time to change so I had to wear underskirt and undershirt and all but I don’t mind because it looks okay but God knows I don’t want to deal with muslin again haha. I hope you like it!”
“The portfolio consisted of an essay and three creative works. I knew I had the write-up in the bag, so I decided to focus a majority of my time on the projects themselves. I chose to create my own outfit from scratch, which proved to be quite expensive. I wanted to show off my passion for fashion history, as well as demonstrate my sewing skills as well. I came up with a bejeweled corset and a slim turtleneck dress underneath. I also wanted to include a French hood for a bit of sophistication. It wasn’t integral to the look, but I needed to balance out the glitz showcased on the top. [...] I won’t go into the specifics about how I constructed this outfit, but let me tell you—I was definitely self-conscious about my own sewing skills and pattern-making abilities. The fit wasn’t exactly perfect, but my mom gently reminded me that every fashion school candidate applies with some sort of detriment. At the end of the day, it didn’t look so bad. Thank god for angles and the nuance of black fabric.”
